My School Diaries

Its very nostalgic to set back the clock and try to remember the yester years. Its 32 years since I spent my childhood in Mumbai, Chembur area . My dad had been transferred from West Bengal and in December'74 we reached Mumbai.

Walking down the memory lane I still remember my first day of joining Loreto Convent School. I remember our morning prayer meetings in the school hall. We all gathered in queues and everyone chatted at the top of their voices till sister Ursula came down from her quarters. When she would come in, there would be pin drop silence. I still remember her habit of saying "Silence"-and no one dared to even breathe. She would catch hold of those who were murmuring and punish them. They were made to stand all day in the school corridors.

Sr Conrad was our principal. She had a very nice personality.Very soft spoken lady she remained in her office and we feared her so. She passed away recently at the age of 98 in Kolkata.

In class, we were quite a big group of girls but Gautami, Shampa and Beenu were my closest friends. In the later years I was particularly close to Beenu. She was the only friend I was in touch with for a long time after leaving school.

Then, there were houses. We had four houses, Red, blue, green and yellow. I was in Blue house. Veena was our Blue house captain. Each house had to work one week in a month cleaning the classroom, wiping the blackboard, cleaning the cupboards etc. It was so much fun competing in various activities, sports, quizzes, competitions.

Once my friend, Manoshi Mukherji won an Essay competition and Sister Ursula took the whole class to recieve the award !!
I remember our lunch break used to be of one hour. Class Monitors had to lock up the classrooms and everyone were to eat in the lunch rooms. Many parents of students who lived near by sent hot lunch boxes with servants.

I sometimes get these strange flashbacks from class 10 at school. Once we the '79 batch, boycotted a Hindi test by Mrs Yashpal and so we were all asked to line up outside the classroom opposite sister Ursula's office on ground floor. Mrs John taught  us maths. She would pinch in the thighs to punish us for our mistakes and we all feared her so.

Social networking sites  have brought us near to our childhood pals. They bring back memories of younger days of friends who are no longer around and as such no more a part of our lives. Suneela my class mate is no more.

Those days of youthful enthusiasm during school makes me nostalgic. I yearn for all my friends. In today's world of daily hustles, the fetish for work tends to overshadow all.

Those days of my school years, when I used to wander around carefree with my friends ,when there was so much to do and with much gusto makes me reflective of the past. Bound by family ties, I am far away from Mumbai, yet school days reminisciences are cherished.

No matter how far I travel, I will always want to come back to this place, where I always feel perfectly at home.
Reunions are a must. They bring back memories of years gone by but still feels new every year.
